Like a Child

Have you ever experienced something that you leave so impacted by that you hope you do not forget it- ever? This past Sunday was one of those moments.

Sunday morning the worship was powerful and you could just feel the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit in the room as we united in spirit to worship. After just soaking at this moment and singing this final song “Way Maker” I finally came to the platform. I am sure the worship team was not sure what to do next as we all desired to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord had given me something to share that would help us in this moment and it might help us transition to whatever He had next.. at least that is what I thought. As I began to speak and approach the center of the stage, something happened. It was not a Tommy Tenney moment in “The God Chasers” but it was very impactful.

What was it you ask? Let me tell you.

As the crowd began to quieten by their well-trained church etiquette, a voice stood out at me. This voice was still singing with all he had, without the worship leader leading them. I realized they were not just late to follow the others, but had lost awareness of the others. They were lost in worship. To get to the punch of the story, it was not some super-spiritual and mature older saint, it was a little child. A young boy sitting center of the room had his hands raised singing out loud enough many could hear but lost with just him and Jesus. The thought ran through my mind, I am not going to stop a child from worshipping if I have to stand here all day.

As a moderator, it does not take long to feel it is all day as you know some are ready to move on. You feel the pressure of some saying, we have sung enough, my feet are tired, if we are going to sing can we change the song.. to name a few. Tears began to rise up in my eyes as I listened to this pure voice of love singing out to his God.

Even when I don’t see it, You’re working
Even when I don’t feel it, You’re working
You never stop, You never stop working
Miracle worker, promise keeper
Light in the darkness
My God, that is who You are

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14 All I could think was the come to me as a little child.

I almost sat down to just say “I am here until you have sung all you can and want.” Then I said something that was so powerful to me if nobody else. I said, “We have been wanting our kids to come in here to see how we do big church and to learn how to do big church, maybe we need the kids in here to teach us how to do real church.”

What was really awesome was that a little girl or two not far from him started to join in with him. Everybody else was listening to him sing, and this little girl jumped in to worship with him in this moment of pure love, pure faith, and pure worship.

At the end of service, I got to speak to this little man of God. I told him how proud of him I was for him just worshipping and I wanted him to know he is free to worship like that anytime he wants to. He told me this and I will leave his wise and pure words for you to ponder as I am….

I just wanted to worship because I love Jesus so much.”

  1. What an amazing service it was. This young child had me crying like a baby. I kept pondering in my mind Lord make me as a little child. We all as adults don’t want to make a scene or don’t want to take to long but all I could say is Lord make me as a little child.

  2. Yes! What a sweet story! Thank you for sharing. If only we all would not worry about what others are doing around us, but just worship Him and serve Him just because we “love Him so much”!
